So You Want to
Make a Bag?
Bag making is one of those crafts that feels a little intimidating at first — but once you've finished your first tote or pouch, you'll be completely hooked.
There's something genuinely satisfying about making a bag. Maybe it's the fact that you end up with something you can actually use every day, or maybe it's just the magic of turning a flat piece of fabric into something with shape and structure. Whatever it is, bag making is a brilliant skill to pick up — and it's more accessible than you might think.
Where Do You Start?
The best place to start is with a simple pattern. A flat tote bag or a basic zippered pouch are both perfect first projects — they introduce you to key techniques without overwhelming you. Look for patterns labelled "beginner" or "easy," and don't be afraid to start small. A pencil case is a bag. A makeup pouch is a bag. You're bag making!
Not sure where to find a pattern? Here are two of my favourites to get you started — and both are completely free:
- Apple Green Cottage — Zipper Pouch Pattern — a brilliant beginner project for learning how to sew a zip. Simple, clear, and so satisfying to finish.
- Melly Sews — Quilted Tote Bag — a great next step once you've got the basics down. The quilted exterior adds beautiful texture and it's a pattern that really delivers.
Once you've chosen a pattern, read through it completely before you cut a single piece of fabric. I know, I know — nobody wants to do that. But trust me, it saves so much confusion later. Get familiar with the steps, check you have all your materials, and you'll feel a lot more confident when you actually sit down to sew.
What Do You Need?
You don't need a huge stash of supplies to get started. Here are the basics that'll carry you through most beginner bag projects:
I've put together a Bag It Up Kit with all the essentials to get you started — no hunting around, just everything you need ready to go.
Don't skip the interfacing — it's the difference between a floppy, sad-looking bag and one that looks like it came from a boutique. Even a light interfacing on your outer fabric makes a noticeable difference.
A Few Tips to Get You Going
Bag making has its own little quirks compared to garment sewing. Here are a few things that'll make your first project much smoother:
- Press as you go. Ironing each seam as you sew keeps everything crisp and makes construction so much easier. It's the step most beginners skip — and the one that makes the biggest difference.
- Clip your corners and trim your seams. Before turning your bag right side out, trim the seam allowances at corners and curves. This reduces bulk and gives you much cleaner edges.
- Test your zip before you sew it in. There's nothing more annoying than finishing a bag and realising the zip is faulty. Quick test first!
- Use wonder clips for thick layers. When sewing through multiple layers of fabric and interfacing, pins can distort things. Wonder clips grip without the drama.
- Don't stress about perfection. Your first bag won't be flawless — and that's completely fine. Every wonky seam teaches you something. Finish it, use it proudly, and start the next one.
Bag making is one of those crafts that grows with you. You might start with a simple tote, and a year later you're adding magnetic snaps, lined pockets and woven labels like it's nothing. The skills build naturally, project by project.
So grab a simple pattern, pick some fabric that makes you happy, and just start. Your first bag is waiting — and I promise it's going to be better than you think.
My Favourite Designer
A good pattern makes all the difference. Over the years I've collected patterns from so many talented designers, but there are a few I keep coming back to again and again.
Kylie at Little Moo Designs is my absolute go-to. Every single pattern she creates is brilliant — well-written, beautifully structured, and always produces a bag you're genuinely proud of. If you're looking for a starting point, I can't recommend her enough. My current obsession is the Athena Mini Backpack — it's the perfect size, has the most beautiful pockets and details, and is endlessly customisable.
